“I would guesstimate that the extra cost for additional sampling, onboard test kits, increased purifier maintenance, supply and installation of cermet piston rings, treatment chemicals, additional filtration equipment is in the region of between US$10,000 and $20,000 per ship per annum,” said Norbulk Shipping executive Sacha Cornell, according to a May 13, 2021 report from the Ship & Bunker News Team.
Sacha Cornell, fleet manager of Norbulk Shipping was speaking about the the added costs of using VLSFO Bunker at recent webinar hosted by Maritime AMC. Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) was developed as a means to meet the IMO Sulphur Caps that went into effect in 2020.
The other alternative is using exhaust cleaning technology, known as Marine Scrubbers.
